The History of the TCU Horned Frog

The Horned Frog (which is actually a horned lizard) has been the TCU mascot for longer than the university's name has been around. While the Horned Frog has been embraced by all Texas Christian University fans, not everyone understands where this quirky mascot came from. As the story goes, in 1896 during the football team's first practice, the TCU, which was then called AddRann College, football field had numerous horned lizards scattered around the field. At some point someone likened the team to the intimidating-looking creatures, and the nickname stuck.

In 1897, the Horned Frog made its first mark on university history, appearing on the cover of the year book, and by 1915 it landed on the official TCU seal. Eventually the Horned Frog was featured on everything from TCU stationery to class rings and even the band's bass drum. Today the Horned Frog remains a beloved part of TCU culture, and is displayed on team jerseys and TCU T-Shirts that students and alumni proudly sport to show their Horned Frogs support!
